The EU ETS in the Commission’s 2030 Climate Target Plan

September 29 @ 15:00 - 17:00

This meeting is under Chatham House Rules | No press

The EU ETS has long been considered one of the cornerstones of the EU’s climate policy. While it has been faced by many issues, the ETS has increasingly proven to be ‘fit for purpose’ in recent years. Today, the EU ETS stands at the dawn of a new revision process, which will have to ensure that it helps delivering on the European Green Deal in an economically efficient way.
This Fall, ERCST will start a series of discussions on the future of this important policy instrument, starting with a first look at the role of the EU ETS within the 2030 Climate Target Plan. This will be followed by a series of topical sessions throughout 2020 and 2021, aimed at discussing specific elements and issues related to the EU ETS, in preparation for the Commission’s proposal due in June 2021 and the subsequent negotiation process.
This meeting will follow the initial brainstorm meeting, and will take a first look at the 2030 Climate Target Plan, released by the European Commission on September 17, and what role the EU ETS has in achieving this enhanced ambition, and how it might be affected.
