This is a public event at COP31.
This COP31 side event will explore how nuclear energy and renewables can work together to deliver resilient, secure and decarbonized electricity systems, while examining the role of carbon pricing and carbon markets in mobilizing investment and accelerating the deployment of clean energy technologies.
Nuclear energy can provide firm, low-carbon electricity that complements variable renewable generation, helping ensure grid stability, energy security and the continuous availability of clean power. Together with renewable energy, energy storage, grid modernization and demand-side flexibility, nuclear power can contribute to cost-effective pathways toward deep decarbonization and widespread electrification.
The discussion will also examine how carbon markets, including mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, can create stronger economic incentives for low-carbon electricity investments, recognizing the emissions-reduction value of different technologies while promoting environmental integrity, transparency and sustainable development. Particular attention will be given to the opportunities and challenges of designing carbon market frameworks that are technology-neutral, credible and capable of mobilizing public and private finance.
Bringing together policymakers, energy experts, international organizations, financial institutions and industry representatives, the event will highlight practical approaches to integrating nuclear and renewable energy within national climate strategies, electricity market designs and investment frameworks.
