ERCST Feedback to the Revision of the CO2 Emissions Standards for Cars and Vans
Author(s): Andrei Marcu, John Cooper, Marino Varricchio
ERCST has submitted its feedback on EU CO₂ emissions standards for cars and vans. Our response highlights the need for a technology-neutral, lifecycle-based approach that aligns with other EU climate policies and strengthens industrial competitiveness.
We emphasize two key priorities:
Aligning methodologies across legislation through lifecycle assessment (LCA) to ensure consistent treatment of renewable fuels and low-carbon technologies.
Recognizing technological diversity by enabling all low-carbon solutions (including electrification and renewable fuels) to contribute to decarbonization goals for road transport.
ERCST calls for reforming the 2035 target to focus on lifecycle CO₂ performance, ensuring flexibility while maintaining environmental integrity.
