The operationalization of engineering-based removals under the Article 6.4 mechanism

The role of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) methods to counterbalance residual GHG emissions have been recognised in global modelled pathways developed by prominent international institutions that limit global warming to either 1.5°C or 2°C. Moreover, during the negotiations in Paris in December 2015, CDRs were also called to play a critical role and to substantially contribute to the achievement of global climate neutrality by building and then adopting the approaches of technology neutrality and nationally determined contribution, among others.

This paper analyzes the peculiarities of engineering-based CDRs when handled within the framework of the Article 6.4 mechanism and simultaneously proposes solutions for the same.
