SUMMARY:The European Green Deal: state of play
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is part of a continuous series of meetings organised by ERCST on the European Green Deal. This work stream aims to bring together policymakers and stakeholders on a regular basis to take stock on recent developments\, look ahead to what is in the pipeline\, and discuss the general implementation of the EGD framework.  The last meeting in this series took place on March 11.\nThe European Green Deal can be seen as a collection of priorities\, principles and areas where legislative proposals will be produced in the coming years. While the full scope of the EGD is not yet clear\, and many of the policy choices will only be decided upon at a later stage\, a number of policy initiatives have already been unveiled or kicked off in recent months.\nThis session will focus on the recent policy initiatives initiated under the European Green Deal\, including the proposal for the Climate Law\, the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive\, the Carbon Border Adjustment Measure (CBAM) and the 2030 target plan.\nIt will also be an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in a discussion on the process and timeline of the implementation of the Green Deal\, how it might be impacted by the COVID-19 induced crisis\, and what role it can play in the post-crisis recovery period.\n  \nRegistration Link \n \nWorkshop Material(s)\nAgenda\nERCST presentation – the European Green Deal: State of Play\nOverview of EGD implementation – feedback opportunities\n \nUpcoming Events\nStakeholder Consultation: CBAM in an International ContextApril 22 @ 15:00 - 17:00Launch Event – 2026 ETS ReviewApril 23 @ 10:00 - 12:00Launch Event – Carbon Leakage under CBAM and Free AllocationMay 13 @ 10:30 - 12:302026 State of ETS – LaunchMay 20 @ 15:00 - 16:30International Townhall: CBAM in an International ContextJune 23 @ 14:30 - 16:30\n\n \nPast Events\n2026 Review of EU ETS – Stakeholder meetingApril 1 @ 15:00 - 17:00Launch Event – Policy options for sustainable mobility: the road to decarbonizationApril 1 @ 10:00 - 12:00Quo Vadis ETS: Challenges and SolutionsMarch 23 @ 16:00 - 18:00

SUMMARY:Creating markets for low-carbon products in the EU
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, EU and Member State climate policies have strongly focused on reducing GHG emissions that are produced within their jurisdictions. Less emphasis has been put on policies\, being it command-and-control or economic\, aimed at incentivising (domestic) demand for low-carbon products.\nMany EU producers are making investments to lower their emissions\, subsequently increasing their production costs and the costs of their final product vis-à-vis non-EU producers of similar goods. Yet\, due to the lack of incentives to buy these lower-carbon\, (often) more expensive goods\, consumption can shift to higher-carbon imports.\nThis is a perverse effect that should be mitigated. While carbon leakage measures\, such as for example in place in the EU ETS\, can mitigate this effect\, mitigation alone is not sufficient to help speed up the global transition to a low-carbon economy.\nWhile research shows that EU consumers are slowly shifting their consumption patterns towards lower-carbon products\, this shift is not fast enough to reach the objectives of the Paris Agreement.\nThis meeting is intended as a public brainstorming session to start the debate on how to stimulate the creation of a (domestic) market for low-carbon products. This will be the first of a series of meetings offering an opportunity for discussion between stakeholders and policymakers in the context of the implementation of the European Green Deal.\nFor the European Green Deal to succeed\, it is vital to encourage demand-side options aimed at building a mass market for low-carbon products. Wider and more concerted actions will allow to boost green demand and make the case for investment in low-carbon technologies and innovations.\nThis session will focus on understanding the state of thinking on this topic from the industry\, think tanks and government perspectives\, the current and planned policies that will ensure that this market emerges\, and the gaps that exist.\nThe webinar will start with an introduction to the topic by Andrei Marcu and Matteo Caspani\, followed by an exchange of views with researchers\, stakeholders and the European Commission.\n  \nRegistration Link \n \nWorkshop Material(s)\nAgenda\nERCST presentation\nPresentation from Fulvia Raffaelli (DG GROW)\nPresentation from Karsten Neuhoff (DIW Berlin)\nPresentation from Oliver Sartor (Agora Energiewende)\nPresentation from Adolfo Aiello (Eurofer)\n \nUpcoming Events\nStakeholder Consultation: CBAM in an International ContextApril 22 @ 15:00 - 17:00Launch Event – 2026 ETS ReviewApril 23 @ 10:00 - 12:00Launch Event – Carbon Leakage under CBAM and Free AllocationMay 13 @ 10:30 - 12:302026 State of ETS – LaunchMay 20 @ 15:00 - 16:30International Townhall: CBAM in an International ContextJune 23 @ 14:30 - 16:30\n\n \nPast Events\n2026 Review of EU ETS – Stakeholder meetingApril 1 @ 15:00 - 17:00Launch Event – Policy options for sustainable mobility: the road to decarbonizationApril 1 @ 10:00 - 12:00Quo Vadis ETS: Challenges and SolutionsMarch 23 @ 16:00 - 18:00

SUMMARY:Stakeholders' Views on the Submissions for Energy Taxation Directive
DESCRIPTION:As part of the policy updates foreseen under the European Green Deal\, the European Commission released on March 4th an Inception Impact Assessment (IIA) on the Revision of the Energy Taxation Directive.\nThe Commission received feedback from 180 industry representatives\, think tanks\, NGOs\, and private citizens from around the EU\, who submitted comments detailing their opinions and suggestions on the IIA. In addition to submitting our own feedback paper (available here)\, ERCST has synthesised other stakeholders’ feedback\, highlighting the suggestions and their main differences and commonalities.\nThis meeting is an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the feedback received ahead of the public consultation period expected in Q2. ERCST will present a synthesis of selected feedback received for the ETD IIA and will moderate a discussion among representatives from some of the organisations that provided feedback to the IIA.\n  \nRegistration Link \n \nWorkshop Material(s)\nAgenda\nFeedback on Energy Taxation Directive Inception Impact Assessment\nDRAFT Submissions Summary Paper\n \nPresentations\nPresentation by ERCST\nPresentation by WindEurope\nPresentation by FuelsEurope\nPresentation by Electricité de France\nPresentation by European Environmental Bureau\n \nUpcoming Events\nStakeholder Consultation: CBAM in an International ContextApril 22 @ 15:00 - 17:00Launch Event – 2026 ETS ReviewApril 23 @ 10:00 - 12:00Launch Event – Carbon Leakage under CBAM and Free AllocationMay 13 @ 10:30 - 12:302026 State of ETS – LaunchMay 20 @ 15:00 - 16:30International Townhall: CBAM in an International ContextJune 23 @ 14:30 - 16:30\n\n \nPast Events\n2026 Review of EU ETS – Stakeholder meetingApril 1 @ 15:00 - 17:00Launch Event – Policy options for sustainable mobility: the road to decarbonizationApril 1 @ 10:00 - 12:00Quo Vadis ETS: Challenges and SolutionsMarch 23 @ 16:00 - 18:00
