SUMMARY:Stakeholder Roundtable – Future of Emissions Trading in the EU: Price Signal and Competitiveness
DESCRIPTION:This is an in person event.  “Important! Online participation is only allowed for attendees located outside Brussels” \nThis meeting is by invitation only. If you are interested in attending\, please contact pnouallet@ercst.org.  \nThis meeting is intended as a brainstorming meeting for a small group of invited stakeholders and policy makers\, in the framework of ERCST’s ‘Future of the Emissions Trading in the EU’ project. The third theme to be addressed by the project concerns Price Signal and Competitiveness\, with the Report to be released in March 2025. \nThe “Future of Emissions Trading System in the EU” is a process that ERCST is putting in place to provide original analytical insights\, pinpoint challenges\, and propose solutions for the evolution of the Emissions Trading System in the EU with the participation in this important debate of EU institutions and EU stakeholders. In the framework of this sub-workstream\, ERCST has been organising thematic events along the year focused on key issues for the Emission Trading in the EU. This is the third of seven reports ERCST will produce in the framework of the Future of the Emission Trading in the EU project. \nDraft Agenda

SUMMARY:Launch Event - Omnibus Regulation: on CSRD and CSDDD
DESCRIPTION:This was an online event.  \nAs the European Commission prepares to unveil the “Omnibus Regulation” proposal on February 26\, 2025\, with President Ursula von der Leyen now directly overseeing the file\, pressure is mounting from all sides – both within and beyond the EU\, and from companies as well as governments.  \nIn this context\, and amid the uncertainty arising from current geopolitical circumstances and concerns about the EU’s economic competitiveness – which may raise doubts about the resilience of its industrial base – ERCST launched a paper addressing key issues to be considered in the Omnibus package\, particularly in relation to the CSRD and CSDDD\, along with a set of recommendations.  \nAt the event\, ERCST presented the paper\, followed by a panel discussion. \nPaper \nYouTube \nSlides \nAgenda

SUMMARY:Focus Group - Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage: Balancing Land Use and CDR Potential
DESCRIPTION:This is an online event. \nThis meeting is by invitation only. If you are interested in attending\, please contact mvarricchio@ercst.org \nAchieving negative emissions is crucial for the European Union to meet its climate neutrality targets by 2050\, and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) plays a vital role in this effort. However\, deploying BECCS must be carefully managed to harmonize with sustainable land use\, ensuring minimal impacts on food security\, biodiversity\, and competition for land resources. \nThis event will delve into sustainable biomass sourcing methods\, including the establishment of certification schemes for sustainable biomass. These schemes aim to ensure that biomass feedstocks are produced responsibly\, promoting environmental stewardship and social responsibility throughout the supply chain. The recent EU policy developments supporting sustainable biomass supply chains will also be reviewed\, providing insights into regulatory frameworks and incentives that facilitate sustainable sourcing and utilization of biomass. \nFurthermore\, the event will address grid integration challenges associated with BECCS technologies and explore potential solutions to effectively incorporate BECCS into the existing energy infrastructure. Topics will include technological innovations\, infrastructure upgrades\, and strategies to balance supply and demand. \nWe will evaluate the economic viability and market opportunities for BECCS technologies\, examining cost factors\, funding mechanisms\, and potential revenue streams. This includes assessing market readiness\, investment opportunities\, and financial models that can support large-scale deployment of BECCS. \nBy convening industry experts\, policymakers\, and stakeholders\, we aim to address the challenges and opportunities associated with BECCS deployment within the EU context. Join us to engage in meaningful dialogue\, share knowledge\, and collaborate on advancing negative emissions technologies to contribute to the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality goals. \nAgenda

SUMMARY:Expert consultation: Solutions for exports of EU CBAM-covered goods
DESCRIPTION:This is an online event. \nThis meeting is by invitation only. If you are interested in attending\, please contact lfleury@ercst.org.   \nAltogether\, 2025 will be an important year for the CBAM\, with decisions on principal design parameters through several reviews and implementing and delegated acts scheduled throughout the year. \nERCST’s ‘Border Carbon Adjustments in the EU – Phase VI’ workstream will start off 2025 by revisiting the topic of exports. \nBuilding on ERCST’s work in Phase III on a WTO-aligned export solution\, and in Phase V on the broader implications of the CBAM for export-oriented sectors\, this first planned paper will seek to propose an updated policy mechanism to mitigate the competitiveness impacts on exporters. \nAt this expert consultation the ERCST will invite a small group of people\, including covered sectors and other stakeholders\, to discuss possible solutions for addressing the carbon leakage risk associated with EU-produced goods subject to the CBAM that are destined for export to third countries. \nAgenda
