SUMMARY:Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement
DESCRIPTION:Article 6 of the Paris Agreement (PA) addresses the issue of “cooperative approaches” under the Paris Agreement. A significant part of it aims to create the framework to ensure that international markets can be a tool to meet National Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the PA.\n \nAfter COP 21 in Paris\, negotiators have a mandate to create a rulebook to ensure that this\, and other parts of the PA become operational. Negotiators are aiming for completing this task in 2018 at COP 23.\nThis side event is an opportunity for stakeholders to be briefed by and enter in discussion with some of the most knowledge participants in these negotiations to understand the progress and challenges  towards the implementation of Article 6 of the PA.            \n \nFiles\nFinal Agenda

SUMMARY:Informal Forum on Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC process
DESCRIPTION:The Paris Climate Agreement adopted in December 2015 recognises cooperative approaches as an important element in the climate change mitigation effort. \nArticle 6 of the Paris Agreement includes several privisons to this end. However\, before the agreement enters into force\, a substantial amount of work needs to be done at the political and technical level in order to operationalise this article.\nThis meeting is a continuation of the project “Implementation of markets and non-market provisions in the Paris Agreement.” It will bring together carbon market negotiators in an informal setting with the objective to explore\, discover\, explain and understand different points of view related to the issues in Article 6. The purpose is to understand the options available to define rules\, modalities and procedures on Article 6\, as well as the consequences of adopting each option. It will also seek to understand why different views are held.\nThe discussions are free and informal\, and will be held under Chatham House rule. This process is totally separate from the UNFCCC negotiating process. SUMMARY:Managing a sustainable transition to a low-carbon economy
DESCRIPTION:This meeting\, organised by ERCST in Brussels\, aimed to bring together key stakeholders that are both affected by\, and involved in managing\,the negative social and economic impacts associated with the global transition towards a low-carbon society and economy. It was designed as a brainstorming session and will discuss the state of debate in Europe\, and identify possible gaps between the EU\, members state and international levels in the work to successfully manage the transition.\nThe first panel aimed to illustrate how social and economic impacts caused by transitions have been dealth with in the past and present\, and what we can learn from these examples and best practices. The second panel focused on the question to what extent the issue is being recognized and tackled by policy-makers and stakeholders\, and how progress can be made\, including in cooperation among different levels of policy-making.\n \nFiles\nFinal Agenda

SUMMARY:Pre-COP 23 Briefing
DESCRIPTION:The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP) was the first step in a longer process towards the implementation of the Paris Agreement. COP 23\, held in Bonn is due to begin on November 6 and seeks to advance the aims and ambitions of the Agreement\, which entered into force faster than anticipated. The negotiations will focus on the development of guidelines on the implementation of the Paris Agreement’s text\, with the desire to complete guidelines at COP 24.\nDuring this meeting\, the discussion will focus on the main issues and possible outcomes of COP 23. The main issues include the architecture of the Facilitative Dialogue and the completion of the Paris COP agenda in time for COP 24 in 2018\, with specific relevance to Article 6 and carbon markets.\n \nFiles\nFinal Agenda

DESCRIPTION:The EU ETS Phase 4 discussion is nearing the end\, yet there are still significant differences in position between the various negotiating parties in the trilogue\, and between members of the broader community of stakeholders. \n\n\n\nThis meeting focused on two aspects of the Phase 4 discussion: how do we address the large over-supply of allowances currently in the market and how will carbon leakage protection evolve up to 2030.
